The department of Sanskrit is one of the oldest department in Handique Girls" College. Established in 16th July,1939, Sanskrit also came into existence on the foundation day of the Institution. Pre–University and Undergraduate courses were introduced in the same year. In 2008 , Honours course in Sanskrit was introduced. The department has completed glorious 84 years of its honoured existence with contribution by its alumni to the academic, social and cultural life of the region.
Department has got one departmental library with around 500 books.
The department has a desktop computer and a projector.
