It´s a voluntary program that provides opportunities for student youth in schools and higher education institutions to engage in community service. NSS aims to develop students´ personalities and character through community service, with the motto "NOT ME, BUT YOU".
"NOT ME, BUT YOU" signifies the NSS volunteer´s focus on the community´s needs.
The NSS badge features the Konark wheel, symbolizing the cycle of creation, preservation, and release, and movement across time and space.
NSS volunteers participate in various government-led community service activities.
The program aims to develop students´ social and civic responsibility, leadership skills, and capacity to address emergencies.
The core idea is to provide hands-on experience in community service, fostering a sense of social responsibility
NSS attempts to bridge the gap between educational institutions and the wider community
The scheme is jointly funded by the Central and State governments.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Handique Girls´ College was established in 1971. The NSS unit was started to encourage students to participate in social service activities. The NSS unit at Handique Girls´ College is actively involved in various community development programs and social awareness campaigns. The NSS Unit, Handique Girls" College has two adopted Villages. The NSS unit works to implement projects and activities aimed at the betterment of adopted villages.
The adopted villages are:
As part of the 7-Day Special Camp organized by the NSS Unit of Handique Girls’ College, the first day focused on community outreach and data collection in Hajongbori village, Chandrapur. The main goal was to conduct a door-to-door survey to assess unemployment and the lack of formal education among youth aged 18 to 29.
Volunteers visited various households and engaged with local residents. The survey revealed that a large portion of the population belongs to the Karbi and Boro tribal communities. Most young people in this age group are involved in pork production and livestock-related work, which serves as their primary means of livelihood. It was noted that formal education is largely lacking among them, with many having dropped out early or never attended school.
In light of these findings, the team gathered contact information from several households and assured them of continued support. Plans were made to revisit the community regularly to raise awareness about the importance of higher education and to offer guidance on available opportunities. The day ended with a group reflection session, where volunteers shared their observations and discussed strategies for meaningful long-term engagement.
On the second day of the 7-Day Special Camp organized by the NSS Unit of Handique Girls’ College, the volunteers took an educational trip to various historical and archaeological landmarks in North Guwahati. The aim was to delve into Assam’s rich cultural, religious, and historical heritage.
The first site visited was the Auniati Satra, an extension of the original Satra in Majuli. As a prominent Vaishnavite monastery, it holds great significance in Assam’s spiritual and cultural landscape. The group toured the Satra’s museum, which offered valuable insights into the teachings of Srimanta Sankardev, Madhavdev, and other key figures of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement. The Bhakats (monastic disciples) conducted an informative session on the origin, practices, and societal contributions of Satras in Assam. They highlighted the role Satras play in preserving Assamese traditions, literature, music, and ethical values.
Next, the volunteers visited the Aswaklanta Archaeological Site, situated along the Brahmaputra River. This site features two ancient temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and two rock-cut caves. According to local folklore, Lord Krishna’s horse became weary at this very place while in pursuit of the demon Narakasura—hence the name “Aswaklanta,” derived from the Assamese words for horse ("Aswa") and tired ("Klanta").
The day concluded with a visit to the Dirgheswari Archaeological Site, a temple with deep religious and mythological significance. It is believed to be one of the sacred sites where parts of Goddess Sati’s body fell as Lord Shiva carried her remains. Known as Dirgheswari Devalaya, the temple stands as a symbol of divine love and devotion. The temple priests shared the spiritual history and importance of the location with the volunteers.
Overall, the day offered the participants a meaningful opportunity to connect with Assam’s rich heritage. These visits deepened their understanding of the state’s history and mythology, making it a truly enlightening experience.
On the third day of the 7-Day Special Camp organized by the NSS Unit of Handique Girls’ College, a data analysis session was held on the college campus. The session was based on a socio-economic survey conducted earlier by the NSS volunteers in Hajongbori village, located in Chandrapur. The primary focus of the survey was to examine the issues of unemployment and the lack of formal education among youth aged between 18 and 29 years.
During the analysis, it was found that a significant portion of the village’s youth, particularly from the Karbi and Boro tribal communities, are not formally educated and are mainly involved in traditional occupations such as pork production. While this indicates a strong connection to their cultural and economic practices, it also highlights a gap in formal education that could hinder broader employment opportunities and upward mobility. However, the data also revealed a positive trend—most children in the village do attend nearby schools, suggesting that there is growing awareness about the importance of education among the younger generation.
The session concluded with an engaging discussion among the volunteers and faculty members on how to bridge the educational gap in such communities. Various ideas were put forward, including organizing awareness drives, initiating adult education programs, and creating skill development workshops tailored to the needs of tribal youth. The participants emphasized the need for sustained outreach efforts to promote the value of education and vocational training. The day proved to be intellectually stimulating and socially insightful, offering the volunteers a deeper understanding of the real-life challenges faced by marginalized communities and how meaningful interventions can be planned to support their development.
On the fourth day of the 7-Day Special Camp, the NSS Unit of Handique Girls’ College conducted an engaging trekking and environmental awareness program at Hathimaraghuli, located within the Rani Reserve Forest. The event, held on 1st May, aimed to give volunteers hands-on exposure to Assam’s rich natural environment and to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of forest conservation.
As the volunteers trekked through the forest trails, they had the opportunity to observe a wide variety of plant species and the diverse landscapes that make up the reserve. The immersive experience offered insights into the complex ecosystem of the forest and highlighted the essential role it plays in maintaining ecological balance. Along the way, students discussed the interdependence between flora, fauna, and human life, and how forests act as a vital component in regulating climate and preserving biodiversity.
The day’s activities sparked meaningful discussions on environmental issues such as deforestation, habitat loss, and the impact of human activities on natural resources. Volunteers were encouraged to think critically about the importance of sustainable living practices and how they can contribute to conservation efforts in their daily lives.
Overall, the program was both adventurous and educational, strengthening the participants’ connection with nature and reinforcing their sense of responsibility toward environmental protection.
The fifth and final day of the 7-Day Special Camp organized by the NSS Unit of Handique Girls’ College was held in Gunpati village, Meghalaya. The day began on an enthusiastic note with the NSS Song, which fostered a spirit of unity and purpose among the volunteers
The program opened with a compelling speech by senior volunteer Nayana Buzarbaruah on the topic of eco-tourism. She emphasized how eco-tourism can serve as a tool for sustainable development, especially in rural and remote areas, by generating income while preserving natural and cultural heritage. Following this, Rimpi Barman delivered an informative presentation on waste management. She shared simple, practical strategies for maintaining hygiene and environmental health, encouraging the villagers to adopt cleaner and more sustainable practices.
As part of their fieldwork, the NSS team conducted a village survey, which revealed a critical issue—the absence of skill-based educational opportunities. In response to this finding, the NSS Unit pledged to launch a handcrafting course aimed at enhancing local skills and supporting livelihood generation. To further engage with the community, a drawing competition was organized for the village children, encouraging them to express their creativity and talents.
An interactive session was also held with a local woman artisan who creates handmade decorative items. Her story highlighted the village"s untapped potential for small-scale entrepreneurship and inspired both volunteers and villagers to recognize the value of traditional crafts.
The day concluded with a short trek to a nearby waterfall, where the volunteers evaluated its potential as a tourist attraction under eco-tourism initiatives. The scenic beauty of the site and its natural appeal further reinforced the day"s theme of sustainable development through responsible tourism.
Overall, the final day was a rich blend of education, community interaction, and environmental exploration, leaving a lasting impact on both the volunteers and the local residents.
