Girls´ College (HGCIPR Cell) was formally established in 2024 though it started its activity from 2023, with the support of Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Govt. of Assam to promote human resource of Gauhati University by providing assistance in various activities related to Intellectual Property Right management. Dr. Ranjit Sarma, Principal, Handique Girls´ College is the Chairman and Dr. Kandarpa Phukan, Department of Chemistry, Handique Girls´ College, is the Coordinator of the HGCIPR cell. Activities of this cell are supported by ASTEC, Govt. of Assam. The objective of this IPR cell is to create awareness and provide guidance to all the members of Handique Girls´ College and students on various issues related to IPR. Since its inception, this IPR cell is working to create understanding among the faculties, staff and students of this university and affiliated colleges about various forms of IPR such as Patents, Copyrights, Designs, Trademark, Geographical Indications, Plant Varieties etc. This Cell has a provision of legal counsel with the help of the Patent Information Center, ASTEC Guwahati in terms of IP issues and policy matters to all the members within the institute.

The IPR Cell of Handique Girls´ College keeps on organising workshops & seminars from time to time in an effort to enhance capacity building. Following is our recent initiative in this direction.
A One Week National Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights was organized by IPR Cell, HGC in collaboration with Patent Information Centre (PIC) of ASTEC Govt. of Assam during 6-10 November 2023 in hybrid mode.
The aim of this event was to sensitize the participants about Intellectual Property and share about the information related to IPR (such as Copyrights, Patents, Geographical Indicator, Trademark, Industrial design Trade Secrete etc.), Research ethics and related issues. The target participants are the teachers of the colleges, universities, innovators, researchers and students. About 100 participants, all are from different colleges and universities from across the nation participated in the course. Resource Persons across the country have delivered lectures and interacted with the participants during the course. Eminent personalities like Dr. Sanjib Kr. Paul (Scientist IICT-Hyderabad), Prof. H. Purusotham (IPR Chair Professor, Andhra University), Prof. Pritam Deb, IPR Chair Professor, Tezpur University), Dr. Swapnil Sinha (CEO, BIONEST IIT Guwahati) Mr. Madhurjay Thakur (Joint Controller of Patents &Designs, Indian Patent Office, Kolkata), Prof Sumarbin Umdor (Dept of Ecionomics, NEHU Shillong), Dr. Anjumani Talukdar,(Registered Indian Patent and Women Scientist C IPR, Siliguri), Dr. Uddhab Bharali (Padmasri Awardee for Innovations), Dr. Prafulla Hatte (Dean, R&D, MIT Academy of Engineering, Pune), Dr. Rajiv Mili (NIF India Guwahati Cell for NE Region, IIT Guwahati) and many others delivered lectures and interacted with the participants. A souvenir was published including articles on IPR and related issues during the Workshop.
