About the Lab

A psychological laboratory is crucial for advancing the understanding of human behavior, cognition, and emotions through empirical research and practical application. It provides a controlled environment to investigate psychological phenomena, test theories, and develop interventions for mental health and other areas. The department of Psychology established in 2011 is one of the first departments in the Northeast Indian region to offer an undergraduate degree in Psychology. The Department"s psychological assessment laboratory has been improving its standard of psychometric assessments and psychological tools over the years. The Psychological Assessment Laboratory has 66 psychometric assessment tools and apparatus which aims to assess different cognitive functioning of the human brain. Ranging from personality, intelligence, aptitude, attitude, memory, learning, adjustment, the laboratory also has apparatus that are required for the practical understanding of the basic human behaviour.

 

Objectives

Conducting Experiments

To provide the infrastructure and equipment for students to conduct experiments, manipulate variables, and observe the effects on behaviour and mental processes.

 

Developing and Refining Theories

Through empirical research, labs help in testing, refining, or refuting existing psychological theories, contributing to a more robust understanding of human behaviour.

 

Enhancing Research Skills

It aims to offer hands-on experience in research design, data collection, statistical analysis, and interpretation of results, equipping students with essential skills for future research endeavours.

 

Promoting Practical Applications

Assessment findings from the lab can be translated into interventions, treatments, and strategies for addressing various psychological issues, such as mental health conditions, educational practices, and workplace productivity

 

Training Future Psychologists

Psychology labs play a crucial role in training future psychologists, providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct research, administer psychological assessments, and provide therapeutic interventions.

 

Assessing Psychological States

The various psychological assessments and measures help to evaluate anxiety, depression, personality traits, and other psychological states not only of the students but all stakeholders of the college.

 

Ethical Considerations

Labs are the first places from where students learn the importance of ethical guidelines in psychological research, ensuring confidentiality, informed consent, and responsible data handling

Research Outcome

The syllabus of the Psychology Major program has a mandatory research component. It is through this laboratory that all practical component is carried out. Moreover, every year the 6th semester students carry out their Dissertations using the assessments available from the laboratory. The department aims to collaborate with schools that offer Psychology as a subject in their curriculum; this will facilitate the young minds to understand the significance of the discipline better.

The students are also taken to various organizations like Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Mind India Institute of Positive Mental Health, Downtown Hospitals. B.Borooah Cancer Institute, GNRC hospitals (to name a few) that provide an exposure to the various assessments used in different settings. Various practitioners from the field of Psychology regularly interact with the students through seminars and workshops to apprise the knowledge of the students in the actual field of work.
