HISTORY

The Department of History, Handique Girls College was established in 1939, the year of inception of the college. Initially, late Jyotirmoy Mazumdar served as a part-time Lecturer, later on Late Jnanada Prasad Sharma, an eminent educationist and social worker became the Head of the Department (1939-1948). The department also feels proud of having prominent historians of Assam like Surya Kanta Barpujari and Senehi Begum as its faculty members. It offers the courses run by the Gauhati University and also a self finance Certificate Course on Archaeology.

At Present  three Associate Professor namely Dr. Runjun Barman, Dr. Malabika Das and Dr. Binoy Kr. Nath and two Assistant Professors namely Dr. Phoibi L. Tuolor and Dr. Dimpy Das are serving the department. Mr. Abani Sarma is also serving as bearer of the department. 

The department serves as a hub of knowledge through research and peer-learning activities such as group discussions, seminars and PPT presentation etc. The department also encourages the students to involve in disseminating new insights and discoveries.Through dedicated research efforts, department contributes to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields. The department plays a crucial role in enhancing the historical knowledge of the students through field trips and research based surveys etc. The department fosters a research environment through collaboration with different reputed academic institutions.
