Event 1: Food Distribution Drive for Community Service

Venue: College Day Home

The Department of Chemistry, Handique Girls’ College, successfully conducted a food distribution drive at Sukreswar Temple as part of its outreach initiative. The programme was successfully conducted by the active participation of faculty members Dr. Anup Choudhury and Dr. Nara Narayan Deori, along with department alumni Dr. Bandita Kalita. The main intention of the program was to help a significant number of homeless and impoverished people to foster community involvement and social commitment. Event 2: Alumni Meet 2025

Venue: College Day Home

Date: 21/12/2025

The Alumni Meet 2025 of the Department of Chemistry was successfully organized on 21-12-2025 at Day Home, Handique Girls’ College (both in online and offline) to strengthen the bond between the department and its alumni, where 21 alumni have attended the meet. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Kandarpa Phukan, Head of the Department by warmly welcoming the former faculty members, alumni, and present faculty. This was followed by a brief introduction of the current faculty members of the department. Subsequently, former Heads of the Department, Dr. Hiranya Kumar Choudhury and Dr. Tapan Thakuria addressed the gathering and sharing the valuable insights and encouraged alumni to remain actively connected with their alma mater. Our proud alumni Dr. Hemaprobha Saikia (Asst. Professor, Bodoland University), Mrs. Karabi Das (Joint Director, SCERT), Dr. Dhanjumoni Pathak (Asst. Professor, Nalbari College) delivered their valuable experiences. This was followed by the reconstitution of the Alumni Committee, ensuring their broader representation and active participation in departmental activities. An alumni engagement session was then delivered by Dr. Anup Choudhury focusing on the importance of alumni involvement in mentoring, curriculum enrichment, and collaborative initiatives. This was followed by a discussion on the one-year action plan, where alumni offered valuable recommendations to uplift the department in terms of academic infrastructure, student development, research collaborations, industry exposure, and student support activities such as guest lectures and career guidance sessions. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Bapan Saha. A group photograph session was organized thereafter followed by lunch, and marking the successful completion of the Alumni Meet.

The programme was anchored by Dr. Alimpia Borah maintaining continuity throughout the event. The smooth conduct of the programme was supported by the technical team members Dr. Anup Choudhury and Dr. Nara Narayan Deori. The GPS photographs and video of the entire event was captured by Dr. Priyanka Barua. The food committee consisting of M. M. Kalita, B. R. Bora, and H. Deka arranged the lunch for the event.

Event 3: Celebration of Mole Day, 2025 followed by poster presentation competition and quiz competition

Venue: Room 30, Departmental Teacher’s common room (poster presentation)

The Department of Chemistry celebrated Mole Day on 23rd October 2025 with support from the DST CURIE Project. The programme featured an invited talk by Dr. Jayanta Nath, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, S. B. Deorah College. The celebration also included a poster competition and a quiz competition among students of the science stream of Handique Girls’ College.

Event 3: Celebration of Biswakarma Puja

Venue: Department of Chemistry

Date: 17/09/2025

The Department of Chemistry, Handique Girls’ College celebrated Biswakarma Puja in the departmental Teachers’ Common Room, reflecting the institution’s commitment to preserve cultural and traditional values within the academic environment. The celebration emphasizes holistic development, institutional values, and promotion of cultural heritage. Faculty members and students actively participated in the programme, reflecting the sense of community, traditional respect, and inclusive institutional culture.

                

                    



Event 4: World Ozone Day 2025

Date: 16/09/2025

Department of Chemistry, HGC sponsored by DST-CURIE scheme, celebrated the "World Ozone Day 2025" on 16-09-2025. Dr. Bapan Saha, Asst Professor, Dept of Chemistry, HGC delivered a talk on this year´s theme "From Science to Global Action".

Event 5: CERTIFICATE COURSE

TITLE: Basic Laboratory and Instrumental Techniques in Chemistry Research

Date: 15/09/2025 to 20/10/2025

COURSE OBJECTIVES: To offer a practical introduction to the key techniques used in chemistry research. Students will explore how modern spectroscopy instruments and chromatography help analyse and understand chemical compounds. With a focus on safe laboratory practices, hands-on skills and clear data interpretation, the course builds a strong foundation for future research and advanced studies in chemistry.

Event 6: Summer Camp for school students

Venue: National Science Centre, Guwahati

Date: 14 /07/2025

An activity corner under the CHEMAGIC Club of the Department was organized during a Summer Camp for school students at the Regional Science Centre, Khanapara, Guwahati, on 14th July 2025. The session was conducted by Prof. P. L. Goswami (Cotton University), along with Dr. Tapan Thakuria and Dr. Kandarpa Phukan, Associate Professors of Handique Girls’ College, who served as “Magic Masters.” Approximately 63 students participated in the programme.

                


Event 7: CHEMAGIC show for Chemistry Popularization

Venue: Sonaram Higher Secondary School, Guwahati

Date: 27/06/25

Department of Chemistry, Handique Girls’ College has conducted Chemistry Popularization Programme by organizing Magic Show related to Chemistry Experiments on 27/06/25, where Dr. Bapan Saha, Dr. Anup Choudhury, Dr. Naranarayan Deori along with the UG and PG students of the Department have actively participated. The participants were the Class V to Class X students of Sonaram Higher Secondary School, Guwahati. In addition, teachers of the school also were actively involved. The students participated in performing Chemistry experiments with the assistance from the students of the college. The Chemistry behind the experiments were also explained in simple and lucid language.

Event 9: Felicitation Program to faculty members and students for the contribution to Science, Education and Research

Venue: PG Room, Department of Chemistry  

Date: 30/04/2025

The Department of Chemistry organized a felicitation programme to honour the achievements of its faculty members and students. On this occasion, the Department felicitated Dr. Tapan Thakuria, Associate Professor and Head, for being conferred the prestigious Dr. Uma Sai Prakash Chemistry Popularization Award 2024 by the Association of Chemistry Teachers, India (the apex body of chemistry educators in the country). Dr. Kandarpa Phukan was felicitated for securing patents for his innovations, namely Alkaline Mineral Salt Making Device (Design No. 430559-001, dated 15/09/2024) and Compact Kitchen Sink Waste Crusher (Design No. 462258-001, dated 14/06/2025), granted by the Indian Patent Office, Kolkata. Dr. Akhtar Hussain was also honoured for receiving the Outstanding Reviewer Award 2024 from the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, marking his third recognition (2020, 2023, and 2024) for his exemplary contributions to scientific peer review in chemistry.

The programme was also organized to felicitate students Ambika Boro, Mowllika Basumatary, and Bhaswati Das for successfully qualifying the JAM 2025 examination and securing opportunities to pursue their Master’s degrees at reputed institutions. PG IV semester students Dhritima Deka, Chayanika Kalita secured commendable marks in the mock test conducted by the department for competitive examinations and they were also felicitated in this program.

 

Event 10: Workshop on FYGUP Theoretical Chemistry Course (Academic activities conducted for faculties by inviting external experts)

Date: 04/04/2025

One Day Workshop on FYGUP Theoretical Chemistry Course is organized by Department of Chemistry in association with IQAC, Handique Girls’ College on 04-04-25. The primary objective of this workshop is to provide basic hands-on training on Theoretical Chemistry (Laboratory course) of B.Sc. 4th semester laboratory course of Gauhati University Curriculum. 17 participants (Faculty members) from 13 different colleges (affiliated to Gauhati University) have actively participated on the said workshop. Dr. Dhruba Jyoti Kalita and Dr. Dhriti Mahanta, Assistant Professors, Department of Chemistry, Gauhati University were acted as Resource Persons. Dr. Ranjit Sarma (Principal), Dr. Madhurima Hazarika (Vice Principal) and Dr. Pori Hiloidari (IQAC Coordinator), Handique Girls’ College were present in the Inaugural Session.

Event 11: National Science Day

The CHEMAGIC Club of the Department of Chemistry celebrated National Science Day on 28th February 2025 at the college premises. Dr. Tapan Thakuria served as the “Magic Master,” and the experiments were demonstrated by students from UG, PG, and HS levels.

Event 13: Interdepartmental Cultural Rally on the occasion of College Week, 2025

Date: 08/02/2025

To mark the vibrant spirit of College Week, the department of chemistry participated in the interdepartmental cultural rally on 8th February 2025. The theme of the rally is: “The Role of Chemistry in Traditional Festivals.” Students from undergraduate and postgraduate programs participated enthusiastically, presenting various festivals in connections to the principles of chemistry. The rally served as a platform to showcase how science particularly chemistry is deeply embedded in our traditions, rituals, and celebrations.

Presented the international festival Diwali, exploring the chemistry behind fireworks, lighting, and colors, and their impact on the environment.

Showcased the Assamese devotional festival “Bhadomohiya Naam-Kritan”, explaining the use of metals and sound chemistry in traditional musical instruments.

Highlighted the essence of Bohag Bihu, correlating its rituals with scientific elements such as agriculture, seasonal changes, and biochemical aspects of traditional practices.

Focused on Magh Bihu, discussing the chemical composition of traditional foods, preservation techniques, and the science of fermentation used in ethnic cuisine.

Beautifully represented Holi, emphasizing the chemical nature of colors, eco-friendly alternatives, and safety aspects.

The rally was led by Miss Trishna Medhi (PG 4th Semester) and Miss Maini Kalita (TDC 6th Semester) followed by traditional Gayan-Bayan coordinated by Miss Kaushita Gayan, Miss Anindita Das, and Miss Gargi Mahanta (NEP 4th Semester). The cultural spirit was further enriched by the ceremonial carrying of the Horai and Gamusa, a symbol of Assamese pride and tradition by Miss Priyanka Patgiri (NEP 4th Semester).

Department of Chemistry, HGC celebrated "International Mole Day" on 23rd October 2024 under the DST-CURIE program sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. On this occasion, a Quiz competition was conducted where eight teams participated.

Event 3

Dept. of Chemistry, HGC celebrated "World Ozone Day" on 16/9/2024 under the aegis of DST-Curie project. On this occasion, Dr. Bapan Saha, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Chemistry, HGC delivered a talk on ´Ozone-the umbrella of earth´, followed by an interactive session with students.

Department of Chemistry, Handique Girls´ College organized a Parent-Teacher Meet on 23rd March 2024 for UG (4th and 6th Semester) and PG students in two sessions. Parents took an active part in it and interacted with the faculty members of the Department.
