Departmental Activities

1. Advantage Assam Programme:

On 26th February 2025, faculty members Ms. Hoitinkim Singson and Dr. Jitumoni Neog, along with the 4th-semester students from the Department of Home Science, visited and attended the Advantage Assam Programme. Students gained valuable insights into regional development initiatives and practical knowledge about opportunities and innovations in Assam.


2. Industrial visit to Excel Foods:

On 5th March 2025, the faculty members and students of the 2nd and 4th semesters visited "Excel Foods". Students gained practical insights into food processing techniques, quality control measures, and the functioning of the food industry.

  


3. Interactive session:

On 10th March,2025, the Department of Home science have organised an Interactive session, Guest speaker Dr. Juliana Sarma, Rtd.Professor, Department of Extension and Communication Management, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat.

  


4. International Women´s Day:

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Sampoorna and Deepjyoti Foundation organized a ‘One-Day Mind–Body Relaxation Session’ on 12th March,2025 with yoga instructor Ms. Kakoli Borah and keynote speaker Ms. Pinki Hazarika, Regional Director, NE–Art of Mining. Students gained valuable insights into stress management.

  


5. Consumer Awareness Programme:

The Department of Home Science organized a "Consumer Awareness Programme" at Jaga Harizan L.P. School, Uzan bazar on 18th March,2025. Students learned about consumer rights, responsible purchasing, and the importance of spreading awareness in the community.

  


6. Swagat Hospital:

The 6th-semester students visited Swagat Hospital as part of their Therapeutic Nutrition course. They learned about clinical nutrition practices, diet planning for patients, and the practical application of nutrition therapy in healthcare settings.


7. World Autism Awareness Day:

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, 2nd April 2025, the 6th-semester students organized a one-day programme at Destination School for Special Needs. Through this initiative, students gained a deeper understanding of autism, inclusive practices, and the importance of empathy and support for differently-abled individuals.

  


8. World Health Day:

On the occassion of "World Health Day" on 7th April,25, an online talk was organised by the Department of Home science in collaboration with the Department of Homescience, HPB Girl´s College. The speaker for the session was Dr. Nishat Firdausi, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Science, Sibsagar Girl´s College. The session was attended by the 4th semester students and faculties of both the colleges.

  


9. Nutritional Importance:

Dr. Meenakshi Dutta Mazumdar, HOD, Dept of Community Science served as a resource person on the topic ‘Unveiling the Nutritional Importance of Culturally Rich Traditional Foods of Assam" for the students of Mathematics Department. Students gained knowledge about the nutritional value of traditional Assamese foods and learned how to incorporate them into a healthy diet.

     


10. Parents-Teacher Meet:

On 26th April 2025, the Parent-Teacher Meet was held for the 2nd, 4th, and 6th-semester students. Key points discussed included students’ class performance, academic progress, and internship programmes. The meeting helped students receive constructive feedback and guidance to enhance their learning and overall development.

     


11. World Breastfeeding Week (1-7th Aug,2025):

On the occassion of "World Breastfeeding Week (1 to 7th Aug,2025), a quiz competition was organised among the 3rd and 5th semester students of Department of Community Science.


12. Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme:

An Interaction session on "Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme" was held on 9th August,2025 at the Dept. of Homescience.The Speaker for the session was Mr. Himanshu Barman, Manager-Project, NEC Funded EDC & IC Project, IIE Guwahati. Students along with faculty members attended the session.


13. World Breast Feeding Week:

On the occasion of "World Breastfeeding Week", a special talk was delivered by Dr. Dipti Devi, Professor & Head, Department of Paediatrics, Shillong Medical College, Meghalaya. The session highlighted the importance of breastfeeding, current best practices, and the role of healthcare professionals in promoting maternal and child health. The session enhanced students’ understanding of breastfeeding practices and strengthened their ability to provide informed guidance to mothers and families.

     


14. National Nutrition Month:

A webinar was organized by the Dept of Home Science & IQAC Cell in collaboration with CPRTTF, Assam Chapter on 27 Sept,25. Dr. Ruma Bhattacharya, Former HOD, Dept. of Food Science & Nutrition, College of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat was the speaker on the Topic "Nutritious Diet foe Everyone".

       


15. World Food Day:

On 16th Oct,2025, the 5th semester students visited the 2 No. Salbari, Anganwadi Centre to observe "World Food Day" Interaction among the students and staff. They learned about the centre´s nutrition activities. The visit helped raised awareness about the importance of healthy food act nutrition./p>

  


16. Fortified Rice:

A special session on the topic "Fortified Rice: What, Why, Where, How and When?" was conducted by Dr. Rodali Duarah.The talk provided a comprehensive understanding of the concept of rice fortification, its nutritional significance, the process involved and its relevance in addressing micronutrient deficiencies. Students gained clarity on the importance of fortified rice in improving public health and learned how fortification contributes to combating hidden hunger in communities.

  


17. Parents-Teacher Meet:

On 8th Oct,2025, A "Parents-Teachers Meet" was organised by the Dept. of Home Science. Parents and Teachers Meet was conducted to strengthen communication between the students and teachers allowing both sides to discuss a student´s academic progress, behaviour, strengths and areas that need improvement ensuring better support for the child´s overall development.


18. Entrepreneurship Development Programme:

Sponsored by Biotech Hub, Handique Girls’ College) on 27/09/2025 and 28/09/2025.Participants gained knowledge on food preservation.

  


19. Awareness Programme:

On Nutrition During Life Cycle on 11/11/2025 at Hazongbari, Chandrapur, Guwahati. Participants gained knowledge on nutrient rich indigenous foods of Assam.

  


20. Implementation of Teaching Learning Material:

By the 6th semester students on 13/03/2026 at Pre-School Centres, Uzanbazar.Students developed skills in preparing Teaching-Learning materials. Students gained experience in preschool teaching. Students improved communication and interaction skills.

     


21. Workshop On Crafting Treasures:

Two days’ workshop was organised by the department of Home science in collaboration with Handique Girls’ College Multipurpose Co-operative society and IQAC on 24/02/26. The objective of the workshop is to equip the students & participants for creating ecofriendly and creative craft through used denims. On the second day of the workshop, the participants are expected to create a creative item using mouldit clay Resource person of the day is Mrs.Pranabi Baruah and Anindita Barman.

23. World Autism Awareness Day:

On the occasion of “World Autism Awareness Day”, the 4th semester students from the Department of Home science are distributing folders on Autism Awareness to each and every department of Handique Girls’ College.

  


24. Consumer Awareness Programme :

The Department of Home science organized a consumer awareness programme on 6/4/26 at 1p.m with the aim of increasing awareness among consumers about consumer rights, responsibilities and protection against unfair market practices. As part of the celebration, the students of the dept digitally presented orbits on consumer rights, misleading advertisement and fake products and its students also demonstrated to test adulterated food products.


25. Entrepreneurship Development :

An interactive session was organized by the Department of Home Science on 27/42026, featuring distinguished alumnae entrepreneurs Aditi Gohain Phukan of AISENG WINERY LLP and Jahnavi Barua of PEEYONEE, along with Ishika Das, PhD Scholar at the University of Calcutta. The speakers shared their inspiring journeys, offering insights into entrepreneurship, innovation, and academic research. The session provided students with valuable guidance, motivation, and practical perspectives on building successful careers.


26. Workshop on OYF (Owning your feelings) :

“OYF (Owning Your Feelings),” an emotional resilience workshop facilitated by Dr. Rijusmita Sarma (Psychologist), was organized by the Deepjyoti India Foundation. The program marked the completion of its six-month journey, culminating on 28 April 2026.The final session, titled “Handling Rejection,” served as the concluding chapter, equipping participants with practical strategies to navigate emotional challenges with resilience and confidence.


27. MoU signed with Deepjyoti India Foundation :

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Deepjyoti India Foundation by the Department of Home Science on 28 April 2026, in the presence of the Principal, department faculty, and Program Director Amrita Borkotoky.

  

28.Interactive Session on ECCE and Preschool Schemes under NIPCCID

Informative and interactive session by the chief guest "Kashmiri Borah",supervisor of National Institute of public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) in district level.Introduced two schemes for child development and welfare,first is ICDS currently known as "Mission Poshan 2.0 and Saksham Anganwadi" and another one is ICDS currently known as "Mission Vatsalya".Also discussed about Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and Child Welfare Committees (CWC) and the toll free numbers 1098 which should be dialed for child care and women safety number 181 which can be dialed for women who are abandoned and harassed.

 

29.Regional seminar on Traditional food knowledge of North Eastern Region.

A one day Regional Seminar  on Traditional  food Knowledge of North Eastern Region: Strength  and Opportunities was organised by The Council for Promotion, Research and Trade in Traditional foods(CPRTTF) in collaboration with KKHOSU on 8th May,2026 bringing together academecians,researchers, entrepreneurs and nutrition experts.The seminar focussed on the preservation,scientific validation and commercialization of indigenous food systems.The faculties and the students from the Department of Home Science, Handique Girls´ College participated in the seminar.

30.Parents-Teacher Meet:

On 9/5/26,the department of Homescience organized a parents teacher meet to discuss the academic progress,performance and overall development of students.The meeting helped strengthen communication between parents and teachers and provided a platform to address students needs and achievements.It encouraged cooperation and support for the betterment of the student´s future.

              

31.Alumni Meet (Hybrid):

 On 9/5/26 an Alumni Meet (Hybrid) was organised by the department of Homescience to bring together formr students and faculty members. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for alumni to reconnect,share their experiences and interact with current students.Various speeches,discussions and new committee members were formed.The alumni meet strengthened the bond between the department and its former students while encouraging guidance and motivation for their younger generation.

       

32.Visit to Destination (A Real Home for Persons/Childrens with special needs):

The Department of Home Science organized an educational and charitable visit to Destination (A real home for Persons/Children with special needs) NGO, Kahilipara, with the active participation of the 4th Semester students and NGO Certificate Course students. As part of the outreach programme, the departmental faculties and students distributed food items, snacks, and art copies among more than 40 special needs children of the NGO. The visit was conducted with the objective of promoting empathy, social responsibility, and community engagement among the students. The programme turned out to be a heartwarming and memorable experience for everyone present. The children participated enthusiastically in various activities and showcased their talents through songs and dance performances, creating a joyful and vibrant atmosphere. The interaction between the students and the children reflected mutual affection, encouragement, and positivity.The Department expresses its sincere gratitude to Destination (A real home for Persons/Children with special needs) NGO for their warm cooperation and support in making the visit meaningful and successful.
